How common are spinal injuries in Miniature dachshunds? I’m thinking of getting a miniature dachshund, is this a good idea? Do they have a good personality? Do they give you good company? And any other info about Miniature dachshunds would be great! the good and bed things about them. Are they easy to train them? And yeh how common are back problems in them? thanks! =)
What should i do the first night my mini dachshund stays? anything special?

My dachshund about 10 months is walking with a limp. His front legs are fine but his hind legs and butt wobble from side to side when he walks. He won’t run as fast as he possibly can and he had little interest in his toy. He drank ALOT of water and had, (really this isn’t a joke and im not trying to be disgusting), the squirts or diarrhea. But when i got home he jumped all the way of to my chest as he will usually do. But when i pick him up, he doesn’t yelp but he makes a grunt noise. He looks kinda sad but that could be because i wasn’t home last night. Is he okay? Is he showing signs of spinal injury or any other disease or injury? Can you please leave a link to a web page that list symptoms of spinal injury?

I have Mini Dachshunds. 3 weeks ago one quit using her back legs… Instantly thought spinal injury and took her to the vet. We have been treating with sterioids and she is improving greatly but still not using all 4 legs normally. Just last night my male started with the same symptoms. Odd, I think that 2 would develop the same symptoms 3 weeks apart. Could this not be the typical "dachshund bad back" and be something they are spreading? I am very worried!

I posted yesterday about my dachshund Dexter acting strange..well I took him to the vet and he definitely slipped a disc. His back legs aren’t working properly. The vet doesn’t think he’s paralyzed because she used this pinching thing on his back legs and he reacted, but she said he needs to be put to bed rest for 6 weeks and given a boatload of medicine daily. I got a big crate for him to stay in with his blankets and water. What else should I include in it?
Also for the bathroom issue..I have to carry him out and sat him in the grass and wait for him to go. He had a bowel movement but he hasn’t urinated today. The doc said I could try lifting his back legs up to sort of help him go but it didn’t work. Any advice?
Also do you think it’s okay if I let him sit in my lap as long as he doesn’t move? 6 weeks with no real interaction besides taking him out to the bathroom sounds hard..surely letting him sit in my lap can’t cause harm?? advice please. I want him to get better.

i have a 8 weeks old mini dachshund name Socks…i love him very much and i am very scared out of my mind right now.. here is the story
About 2 hours ago socks jumped of my bed and landed on his feets..he then whine in pain and was shaking and scared…After that i took Socks to pee and he walks normaly and is not wobbling but he does walk slower then usual..do you guys think Socks have a high chance of having a slipped disc..if so how many percent…
— this happen at 11 PM so i could not take him to the vet until tomorrow morning..im just sitting here worry and scared out of my mind =((..
John G: i checked all around his legs back everywhere and pressed on all the point and he did not whine or anything.. he seems not to be in any pain when i pressed his legs back etcc..
Can you tell me what are the symptom I should look out for if he does have a slipped disc..
One of his back leg is weak and it seems injure or fracture….
I took him to the vet today 8/1/09.. the vet came out and told me that there’s seem to be nothing wrong with all his 4 legs.. they told me it seems like his two back leg are sprain.. and they told me i should just wait it out and the sprain should heal on its own within time..

My dachshund Dexter has a slipped disc. He was on bed rest for a couple weeks and the past week or so I’ve been doing exercises with him in the bathtub. Anyway he is starting to walk. Before he would just drag his legs, now he puts his back legs up as normal but after a few steps they wobble like he is unsteady and usually he plops down, then gets back up. Is this normal? I’ve had to carry him to the grass a ways from my apartment because he’s still dragging a bit and on the concrete it hurts his skin.
Will he always be a bit wobbly like this? I hope it will get better..it will be probably not be completely gone but enough that he’s able to walk more easily..are there any other exercises I should do with him besides the bathtub to get his back legs strong again (ive noticed he has put on a bit of muscle). Should I encourage him to move as much as possible inside (on the carpet)? Thank you
yes Ive seen the vet twice (once right after he slipped the disc and the last time about 2 weeks ago)

Has anyone had a Dachshund with slipped disc, and had the surgery to fix it? Was the surgery successful? How much does it cost? Does anyone know of any veterinarians in the Houston area that would take monthly payments? I’m asking for a friend

My 3 year old dachshund was diagnosed with a herniated disc in his neck last Monday. He was put on Prednisone for the pain and I was told no running, jumping, or climbing stairs for 3 weeks. He is currently being weaned off of the Prednisone. Today, he is experiencing pain while walking. Is there anything that I can do for him? Is it normal for him to be experiencing pain before he gets better? What else can I expect during the next few weeks?
