Anyone have low back pain after cevical fusion?

I had a cervical discectomy with fusion and began having severe electrical like pain in my low back after surgery. I’ve had back pain ever since then, several years now. After a recent MRI now I have severely bulging disks in the lumbar area and have been told it’s common to have another part of the spine go bad after surgery on another area of the spine. Anyone ever had this happen to them also? This is a work comp injury and they are denying the surgery I need for my low back and stating it’s not related to the neck injury and surgery I’ve already had. Who else has had this happen to them? Please let me know. Thanks!
I had low back pain with left leg numbness before my surgery. Because it wasn’t the primary area of concern or was it the worst pain, there wasn’t much focus on it. The low back pain before surgery was an achy deep burning pain. After the surgery it became a sudden sharp electrical pain. Since then the pain has changed back and forth to the point I never know how it will affect me each day, which kind of pain I will have. Because work comp will only treat the part of your body they think is related to the injury, the only part of my spine they did the MRI on was the cervical area. It wasn’t until after the surgery and several months later that the ortho doc ordered the lumbar MRI and that’s when they found all the bulging discs and pinched nerve. A recent MRI of the same area shows it’s gotten much worse and now with retrolisthesis. They refuse to settle my case but also refuse to treat my low back. I developed post traumatic fibromyalgia after cervical surgery too. Any suggestions?

Would my back pain get worse during pregnancy?

I have to go the the chiropractor regularly, mainly for neck and shoulder pain. Sometimes I have low back pain as well. I have an old injury in my neck and wonder if the strain of a pregnancy would cause me to have more pain? My husband and I want to start a family, but I am so scared what that will do to my back.

Can exercise help low back pain?

whenever I go for a couple of weeks without exercising and lifting weights I get low back pain. My back will start to feel stiff and when I exercise I feel great. However, I had a fall a couple of weeks ago which created a contusion on the bone next to my spine and pain went into my gluteus. Then the pain started to move around. My doctor said that that is a good sign as it is most likely muscular and not disc related. Now my lower back is aching but my doctor has me on no work/activity status. How do I know if the pain is my normal low back pain or related to my injury. He wants to send me to a physical medicine specialist buy that would require me to miss more work because the appt. is 9 days from now.

I was in a car accident back in September. I was at a stop light, with 2 other cars in front of me. The lady behind me had atleast 1 and a half car lengths. She was stopped also. The light turned green, the first car proceeded through the intersection, the second car moved up to make a right turn, i moved up no more than 5-7 feet. and then WAM. My car was slammed by the lady behind me. She totaled my car, I have been to a chiropractor, now I am in physical therapy awaiting to see whether or not a MRI is going to be ordered. I have had and still have to this moment Low Back Pain, and Neck pain. The other ladies insurance have been taken care of me as far as being off work, medical expenses, etc… I dont feel like I need a lawyer simply because my main concern is getting back to pre-injury status. Which is what the insurance company says is there goal. It has been a pain in the neck but I dont see being sue crazy as number one. What should I expect from here on out? I dont know if I will ever be back to normal, as I have released all previous medical history to them because I never had any medical history.
Sorry, The second car stopped while yielding for a pedestrian.

What does true back labor feel like? I am not having uterine contractions but my back is hurting like it never has before like someone is trying to pull my spine apart vertically and it is just above my tailbone in the sacral vertebrae. I have chronic low back pain from a prior car accident but this pain that I am having now is much lower than my previous back injury. So far it is unrelieved by my prescribed pain medicine and prescription muscle relaxant. I am afraid to let my OB know for fear of him sending me to the Emergency Room for nothing if goes away soon! I am trying the heating pad right now to see if that relieves the pain before I consider calling him and going to the ER with this. Any suggestions on what it could be? or is it just the weight of the baby making my back my painful?
ok I will call my OB if it persists past another 1 hour since i just started with the heating pad and so far it seems to be starting to help, thanks for the advice!

Pain in the lower back – sciatic nerve?

I’ve been with a terrible and incisive low back pain in the area of the sciatic nerve. It runs all the way down to the left hamstring and to my calf producing at some moments during the day numbness. My walking is so slow due to the continued and severe pain in my butt (just left side). Is there something could help me to deal with the pain beside over the counter drugs? Exercises?

I have a low back pain issue that makes it difficult to buy just any car. The Honda Accord and some Civic models have the perfect lumbar support system for my back. Unfortunately, I need a car that is not so low to the ground since our driveway is a long, uphill gravel one. Since I have had luck with the Honda Accord, I have looked into the CRV and found that the earlier models did not have the lumbar support option and caused me alot of pain when I test drove them. Does anyone know if Honda re-engineered the driver’s seat in the CRV and if so, when? Thanks!

I have had low back pain for six months with sciatica down my left leg. They are finally willing to perform surgery. I would just like to know what to expect in terms of pain, recovery, things I can do to make life a little easier, etc. Thank you so much in advance!

What is low back pain ?

Low back pain results from a back injury or certain types of arthritis. Back pain is one of the most common health problems in the United States. It can occur at any age in both men and women. Treatments include pain relievers or anti-inflammatory drugs, exercise, heat or cold, joint protection, pacing your activities and self-help skills

Let me explain my issue in a bit more depth for you. I have not made a concerted effort to work out that didn’t fizzle after s few months and a large part of the reason is issues that came out of any attempt to strengthen my abs that I have undergone. When I try to do ab exercises I find it nearly impossible to not work my abs and instead I end up causing pain to my lower back.

I have tried the whole imprint idea from Pilates which the instructor told me I was doing correctly. I have tried using crunches as well. Sit ups are difficult and hurt my back even more quickly than crunches. In addition, any exercise that requires me to lift my legs up into the air completely ruins any imprint that I may have been doing. As soon as my legs are up my imprint is gone. It is more than Pilates related work though. I have tried a body sculpting class that is more of a high paced movement class than the Pilates fusion class. I have tried various exercises from a weight training class. That was absolutely the worst. We started out doing bicycles and then modifying that into more difficult exercises. Most of the time I get lots of low back pain and only rarely do I actually feel any burning in my abs or soreness the next day.

The pain I get in my back is what makes me stop because of what kind of pain it is. It isn’t just, "Oh I am a little sore from not being used" or "I am burning because I am being worked" or even "wow this is difficult pain. It is more along the lines of "This feels unnatural and I need to arch and contract to properly do this action (even though it isn’t supposed to be obviously)" pain. I guess a less animated way of describing it is that my back feels as if it is straining and in addition to that the actions is is doing are out of not otherwise being able to successfully complete an action.

I have had different people tell me different things and I don’t really know what to believe at this point. I have heard that it is natural, which I am inclined not to believe because even when I try to fight through the back issue (rarely), I don’t usually feel any work actually being done to my abs. I have been told that it is just because my abs are so weak that my lower back needs to support them which does make some sense. I really don’t know and even at that nobody has yet to be able to give me a way to resolve this problem.

I am now enrolled in swordmanship classes and most of the actions we perform there come from utilization of the core muscles. For that reason I would like to improve them as much as is possible and I would most certainly like to continue with exercising. It seems that I get less involved with a physical activity once working out for it stops working.

Alright, sorry for all of the details but I don’t think that people usually have all of the information to address the entire issue, now I turn to you. First of all what do you think is causing my lower back to hurt when I try to do ab exercises? How would you suggest that I do about working on it? If part of the issue is just that mat work is in some way too difficult for my body at this point what alternatives would you suggest to me?

Oh and I should add that knee issues and lower back issues, such as and/or related to bad posture are very common in my family. That is part of the reason that any straining back pain concerns me so much.

Thank you!

My wife and I were in an auto accident in Feb 08. It was in our 1993 Chevy truck. The other driver ran a red light and hit the driver side. As a result my head broke out the driver side window. I did not go to the ER in the ambulance we drove after the report was filed with the police. I went for neck and low back pain and wife sustained buises to her right arm and right knee. They did a Catscan that ruled I had severe whiplash and for the back pain they told me to folow up with a chiro. I recieved 2 month of treatment from them for my back. I actually stopped going because the visits started hurting. After not going for a week or so. It still hurt a getting out of bed and every now and then it would remind me. I am a police officer and light duty is not an option. Anything can happen at anytime. About a month ago I woke on a day off and I couldn’t walk without have back pain and shooting pain around my ribs, breathing hurt.I thought it was the way I slept. cont.
The pain persisted all day. I decided to sleep on another bed. All night and the next morning PAIN,PAIN,PAIN. So I went to the ER I couldn’t even made it from the car to the door. After 7 hours of getting my pain under control.|The ER doctor advised that I have a herniated disc and gave me a week off work. So in bed on my back for four days pain lets up enough to return to work. I followed up with my doctor who gave me more pain medication and sent me for x-rays. Now at work I have to get out of my patrol car periodically because my legs go numb. |I have stopped wearing my bulletproof vest because it helps a little. BAD IDEA I know but what do I do Find a new career. Still have to go back to see what x-rays showed but I am wondering what to do about the injury settlement. We already settled the vehicle part. The damages were 00 to the vehicle totalling it. Considering the truck was worth 00.
All help from claim personal would be great!!!!!!!!!

I have been suffering from low back pain for the past 2.5 years now. Initially, it started as small pain but gradually increased to a high level. The pain was mostly on the left side.

In Dec 2006, I had an MRI taken which showed mild disc bulge at L4-5 on the right side and significant disc herniation at L5-S1 on the left side. The MRI also showed some disc dehydration at these two disc levels.

For the past 2.5 years though, the pain used to vanish by 95% when I used to sit down. The pain was continuous while walking and standing at one point.

But since 10 days, the pain has increased to such an extent that I am not even able to sit. The pain starts in the lower back, goes down the thigh and legs and sometimes a burning sensation in the legs. Also, the pain has started on the right side of the lower back which was not there earlier.

I had another MRI taken recently in Oct 2008 and the report was not much different from the earlier one. The only difference was that now the disc herniation at L4-5 and L5-S1 has become bilateral now ( on both left and right sides ).

I have been continuously undergoing physiotherapy for the past 2.5 years but there has not been a period where I was completely free from pain. I have also recently tried Ayurvedic therapy for 7 days continuously and there was no significant relief.

I have heard about this spinal decompression technique which might be helpful for such cases of lower back. This would be the last resort before surgery.

Can anyone tell me whether this really helps ? Are there any risks associated with it ? Also, is the treatment available in India ?

I am ready to spend time, effort and money if it really helps. I have one year of time to go before marriage and I want to get rid of the pain before that.

Sorry for having taken your time with a long history but thought to explain the problem in detail.

Looking forward to some quick replies.
