vets say my dog has a slipped disc?
the vets say my dog (chihuahua boy) has a slipped disc and is semi paralysd.
he cannot walk on his right leg, but has got feeling in all his legs and can stand perfectly well on all 4 legs but he has problems walking.
i have got some anti inflamitry tablets off the vets.
what are the chances of them working for him and him walking again?
they have said that if they dont work he may have to have surgory and its looking into the thousands. they havnt done any xrays on his legs/hips/spine but they are determind that its his spine.
what are the chances of him recoverying without surgory?
the operation is pretty risky, i want him to recover without surgory and was also wondering how long it would take 4 him to recover without surgory, and what can i do to help him?
hes only 2years old and it happend on sunday and we got him to the vets on monday and then they asked us 2 come back on the tuesday and they said he had improved, he was there yesterday and they said he improved again.
Also when he went in the bath his right leg kinda flopped out to the side like there was nothing there, but he is standing and has feeling in his legs, he isnt crying to show hes in pain or anything, and on the back of his legs theres a tendan or bone, it joins from his thigh to his little part of his leg and his right one is really elasticy and the left one is really hard, and its his right leg he has problems with could this be part of the problem? im not back up to the vets till monday.

These are all good questions to ask he vet who treated your dog. We don’t know which disc slipped, how long before you took him to the vets, how old the dog is, or how he is responding to the medication you were given. Only the vet who treated him can help you with your questions.
im not a pro but u have more of a chance of him walking if u get the surgerory or possibley and anputation(dogs do fine with 3 legs trust me)
this is something to discuss with your vet.
Back injuries tho rarely recover. Typically if improovement is not shown within a few days of treatment, its not likely that recovery will happen. Its very important to get back injuries treated ASAP.. the sooner its treated, the more likely for recovery.
This condition is certainly very serious. It sounds like your vets don’t need to do xrays because you can be fairly sure from a clinical exam that a dog has slipped a disc. The only time you’d really do xrays is if you are going to do surgery on it.
He may well recovery just with anti-inflammatories, however he is also going to need STRICT rest. There’s no way to say how likely this is without seeing him, however if he’s got feeling in his back legs then that is a good signs, as is him being able to stand and walk. If he were paralysed then it would be a different story and surgery would be the only way forward.
This is going to be a loooong road to recovery and I would be saving money for surgery just in case because there’s nothing to say that that disc isn’t just going to pop out a little bit more and cause paralysis.
Best of luck with your boy, he’s really going to need your help and dedication to get through this difficult time.
If in doubt you should always speak to your own vet.
Yes, my Ginger had a slipped disc this past winter.
I put her on medication from the vet and STRICT crate rest for a month, plus I started taking her to the chiropractor. She is doing quite well now.
I have personally seen dogs recover from full rear-end paralysis, so don’t give up hope yet.
We had a mini schnauzer with the identical problem….under the vets advice we gave him anti inflammatories, and he received acupuncture which helped him immensely, can’t say enough good things about it. This conservative approach should always be your first course of treatment, if this fails to relieve your dog of pain and discomfort, then try surgery….but, I’d sure try this conservative approach first.
Do remember that when you give your dog anti inflammatories you may also need to give him something for any stomach irritation…..check with your vet on this…..
Edit: Great new that your dog is doing better….you’ll be amazed at what they can do if given half an opportunity. That tight tendon is a response to the back injury.
